Line OEE versus Asset OEE
"There is some debate as to whether OEE is more useful as a shop-floor tool to measure a single asset at a time (Asset OEE), or a site-wide tool to measure the effectiveness of entire lines (Line OEE). Flexible OEE systems will record stoppage by asset and by line, so that sites do not have to install multiple counters or re-route products down different legs."

Methods for calculating OEE across a Line or for an Asset

Manually, measuring a single asset at a time is more straightforward than measuring a line count, line waste, and all asset stoppages on that line. However, many sites now wish to measure OEE by line, and this can be a complicated process to implement manually.

With an OEE system however it is possible to measure both an ‘Asset OEE’ and a derived but accurate, ‘OEE by line’ score by taking a case count at the end of each line.

Here is an example based on the ‘Line B’ diagram below:

Asset OEE - Leg B1 stops. Downtime is recorded against asset B1. Asset B1 loses availability. Line B loses 33% of it's performance.

Line OEE - Leg B1 stops. Downtime is recorded against asset B1. Line B loses 33% of its performance potential.

The only real difference is Asset B1 loses availability whereas the Line has calculated a performance loss. However, most teams will report losses across the line and know they have to fix the problems on B1.
