Six Sigma

Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects, where a defect is classified as anything that can be related to customer dissatisfaction.

The Six Sigma methodology was devised in Motorola during the 1980’s and heavily inspired by previous quality improvement methodologies such as quality control, TQM, and Zero Defects.

The fundamental objective of the Six Sigma methodology is the implementation of a measurement-based strategy that focuses on process improvement and variation reduction through the application of Six Sigma improvement projects. This is accomplished through the use of two Six Sigma sub-methodologies:
  • The DMAIC process - define, measure, analyse, improve, control. This is an incremental improvement system for existing processes falling below specification.
  • The DMADV process - define, measure, analyse, design, verify. This is an improvement system used to develop new processes or products at Six Sigma quality levels. It can also be employed if a current process requires more than just incremental improvement.
The success of Six Sigma projects is based heavily on the accurate collection of data from the manufacturing environment. OEE software has the ability to provide this with multiple levels of detail.
